Originating from central Punjab and developed especially by Aagrah, the Aagrah Karahi cooking sauce is typically an aromatic dry dish and best served with chappati's.

Ingredients: Chopped tomato (tomato, tomato juice), fried onion (onion, sunflower oil), rapeseed oil, garlic, ginger, salt, green chilli, cumin, turmeric, garam masala (coriander, ginger, cinnamon, cumin, black pepper, pimento, cardamom, clove, bay leaf, cassia, nutmeg), liquorice, citric acid, chilli powder, natural flavouring.

Creating your delicious Karahi - Great with meat, poultry, fish or vegetables

  1. Add 2 desserts spoons of oil into a pan and heat, add 400g of your chosen meat/vegetables and fry until browned.
  2. Stir in the base, add 70ml of water to the jar, replace lid, swirl around and add this to the pan.
  3. Bring to the boil with the lid on and simmer gently for approx. 10 mins or until thoroughly cooked and your Karahi reaches the desired consistency. To make your Karahi really special add a handful of chopped fresh coriander – delicious!

Really delicious sauce bases

We've been buying from Aagrah for a while now, and their curry sauce bases are unmatched. My partner and I eat the Karahi one quite routinely: I learned how to make meatballs with lamb and coriander (along with their Punjabi spice mix!), then throw those in with onions, mushrooms and some fresh single cream (though you can use chopped tomatoes if you want substance over sauce!). All comes out perfectly, every time.

I really can't recommend Aagrah more highly. I encountered them as a Christmas present last year, and since then, we've always kept a few of their sauce jars in the cupboard. They've got plenty of decent starter recipes you can work with, but it's also worth playing around with them: you'd be amazed at what you can produce!

Best cooking sauce in the UK

Hands down winnner. I love them all but the Karahi has such excellent lower fat and carb content with zero reduction in flavour it's my go-to. Especially if you prepare and cook your protein with the Punjabi spice mix, then add it to the curry. Wonderful.

Almost there

The recommendation to add water makes the sauce too thin, I bulked it up with canned tomatoes no liquid

Sugar content changed?

I have enjoyed you Balti and Karahi sauces for quite a while and always thought they were the most authentic sauces you could buy. However the last 2/3 I have had, they have been incredibly sweet so I’m not sure if I have had a bad batch or the sugar content has increased?

They are still tasty but too sweet!
